The method that teaches kids the value of money in a few hours
What you will find in this article:
When we strarted working at Investory, we talked to many parents interested in their children and their future.
Most parents told us that the biggest challenge when it come to their kid's financial education is to make them understand the value of money.
If you are in the same situation as most parents, read on and see how you can make the little ones experience first-hand the value of money.
Download Investory, the game that lets kids experience financial situations. Investory is available both for Android and iOS.
Classical methods do not work
You could try and experiment with all classical financial education methods. There are a lot of resources out there, such as books, notebooks, boardgames or even worksheets.
You could study the theory together with your kids and hope they understand. You could even fill a worksheet or take a test.
It will all last only until the second day, when they will see a commercial or they will see a new toy at a friend's house and all the lessons won't matter anymore, nor how much money mommy or daddy make nor how many toys they have already got that month.
The lessons will be forgotten and replaced by the thought of the new toy.
In order to learn, they must experience it
For a kid to truly understand a lesson, they must experience it first-hand. No matter how hard you try to teach them and offer them example or put them in hypothetical situations, they won't fully understand.
Obviously, they will nod, repeat what you said and give the impression that they understood.
Unfortunately, kids only learn from what they experience. And for a kid to truly understand the value of money, they must fell what lack of money feels like.
You don't want to be the bad parent
It sounds easy, right? For a kid to experience the lack of money, you take their money away. Even more, you take their money when they truly need it. To make sure the lesson is learned, you only take their money after they have been saving it for a certain goal.
Well, when it comes to actually doing it, most parent's won't do it. Most parents don't want to be the negative characters in their kids' stories. Even if they know it's for the best, they simply can't do it.
Kids can now experience first-hand the financial lessons in a a controlled environment in Investory, the game that you can now download both for Android and iOS.
We found the method that teaches kids the value of money and parents do not have to do anything
We thought there must be a solution for this problem. Education has evolved a lot in the past years and the same goes for technology.
We looked at the already existing solutions - books, games, worksheets and they all missed this practical element to them. They were all focused on lesson after which they stopped. We won't even talk about the educational system which condones these inefficient practices.
After that, we came back to the theory and we found out that learning through play and experiential learning are two modern forms of learning and education which, other than being efficient, are also the most fun and entertaining for the kids.
Even if it sounds too good to be true, play and real experience are the best forms of learning for a child and their success in adulthood, as evidenced by LEGO Foundation or UNICEF through their studies. LEGO Foundation or UNICEF through their studies.
We created the game from which kids learn and have fun at the same time
Also, we used our knowledge, as well as the knowledge of other experts and we set to create a fully complete solution. We went to accelerators and other mentoring programs and learned from the best.
We also put our extensive knowledge and that of other experts at play to build a truly complete solution out of Investory. We went to tons of accelrators and mentoring programs where we learned from the top experts from various industries.
We have launched three modules of the games so far, each with its own financial lessons and its own mysteries and own characters.
So far, about 50.000 kids have enjoyed and learned from the Investory experience, from countries such as Romania, United Kingdom, The Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, Finland and Denmark.
In the first misson, kids learn the basic lessons - Recurring income, goods and services, shopping, investment and interest. This lessons are a good introduction in financial education and are not hard to understand.
In the second mission, the lessons become more and more practical and anchored in reality - banks, cash and cards, savings and the postponement of the reward.
In the third mission, the children learn on their own:
- How to cope when you don't have enough money (Barter)
- Why it is important to have savings (and how it affects them when they don't) lipsa their)
- How interest-saving bank accounts work
Kids learn to hande situations when they have no money
Even though kids can learn about bartering in the first mission of Investory too, in the thirs mission it will be more comprehensive. It's a really old method which stayed effective throughout thousands of years of mankinds.
In Investory, kids learn how to handle real-life situaitons, no matter what resources and possibilities they have. If the will sometimes need something and they won't have the money, they will use their financial wisdom and they will reach their purposes no matter what.
Don't worry, in the game they also learn how to be responsible and how to live within their own means.
Children experience what it means not to have savings
If unfortunatley they won't have enough money, they will still be able to make them but it will be hard and time-consuming. Even if they will see this as something bad, they wil learn their lesson and won't do it again.
If the kids will not have enough money, they will still be able to earn the rest of them but it will be harder and more time-consuming. Even if the will see it as something bad happening to them, the lesson will be learnt.
Children learn how interest-saving bank accounts work
The last lesson in this mission is about savings accounts. From the second mission, the little ones have a bank account and a bank card. In this mission, however, they will have to add some money to the savings account, in order to advance but also to prove that they are wise. Arriving at the bank, Veronica will explain to them exactly what they need to do.
Thus, children live the experience as close as possible to reality and you will not have to open such an account if you still do not know for sure how prepared the little ones are.
How can you access these lessons?
It is very easy for you to enjoy the advantages of financial education done correctly for your children.
The first mission is free because we want you to convince yourself and see if the little ones like or not this interactive form of learning.
After completing the first mission the kids can still continue the Investory adventure by buying the second mission and third mission, for a small price which can be considered an investment in your kids' financial education as well as in the education of all children which will play the game.
For the price of a soda or a chocolate bar, you can invest in their education and prepare them to become adults without money worries.
